TTT #194 – Our Top Ten Webtoons

Posted May 19, 2020 by Lillian in Features / 11 Comments

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together

Happy Tuesday y’all! This week’s topic is “Reasons Why I Love [Insert your favorite your book title, genre, author, etc. here]” We immediately thought of one thing to insert: WEBTOONS. It is our new obsession. WEBTOON™ (in their own words) is a “whole new way to create stories, open to anyone with a story to tell, and home to thousands of creator-owned content with amazing, diverse visions from all over the world.” Think of it as the Wattpad for comics. There are a lot of amazing stories out there, and we have only scratched the surface of this site.  Genres from horror to fantasy to scifi to romance and everything in between can be found on WEBTOON™. We are bending the topic slightly and listing our favorite WEBTOONs. Titles link to the WEBTOON™ page for easy reading.

My list is in no particular order because I cannot put them in order because I love them too much, okay?? I spent all this past weekend bingeing “I Love Yoo” and I’m still not over it. WebTOONS has become my new fandom and I’m okay with that. Lillian and I have a lot of overlap with our favorites, so I’m going to just focus on the ones she didn’t mention, except for one. 😉 Rest assured, I like SO MANY MORE, I just had to make myself narrow it down to the ones that make me drop whatever I’m doing to read whenever I get the notification that it’s been updated.

I cannot get enough of these! I look forward to the weekly updates and devour as soon as I get the chance. I both like and dislike the weekly format. I like that they are short and can be consumed quickly, a distraction from the day to day. But at the same time they always leave me wanting more. That said….totally worth it! As Amanda said, the list in no particular order because we love them all!

Our Favorite Webtoons

I Love Yoo by QuimcheeShin-ae has been down on her luck for most of her life, it seems, after her parents separate and her mom takes her sister away. She has lost hope in her fellow man and has no interest in friendship or romance, which is all upended the day she spills a drink on a rich boy’s jacket. I don’t want to say too much because I don’t want to spoil it, but let’s just say I have like four ships sailing in this one.😉 Quimchee is one of the WebTOONS creators that collaborates with a musician to add music into the background of her toons. It completely changes how you read and react. It’s an experience unique to webcomics – it makes me wonder what the soundtrack to my favorite books would be…

SubZero by Junepurr: Dragons y’all….for real! I love the dragons. This fantasy centers around the last two dragons of warring clans. To stop the war, they are forming an alliance through marriage. One is ice, the other fire. They could not be more different or more alike. The colors of this one along with the occasional music make it beautiful, adding to the story, letting you fall into the world. I love the two main characters. The story centers around them both, alternating from their points of view, but also building a few side characters, giving you insight into their heads as well.

Let’s Play by Mongie: There are some comics on this list that I have to read a couple of times, because when I get my little notification that they’ve updated I get too excited and end up reading the episode too fast. This is one of them. Sam has made an RPG video game and has sent it to a gaming (WebTOONS equivalent of) youtube reviewer, Marshall Law. He absolutely slams it, not knowing he’s played it wrong. Turns out – guess who just moved into Sam’s building?? (Hint: It’s Marshall). Also, Sam has a super cute Welsh boss that liiiiikes her. And also, also, Marshall is dating a beauty (WebTOONS equivalent of) youtuber with pink hair (Manda approves). And SAM is an avid gamer and programmer – who writes female programmers?? Well Mongie does and she absolutely nails it and I ship everyone.

Lore Olympus by Rachel Smythe: If I had to pick a favorite, this one would be it. I think Amanda agrees 😉 Greek mythology has always drawn me. I love retellings and spins on the mythology as well, making it more contemporary. This particular Webtoon is just that, a contemporary take on Persephone and Hades. I love it so much! And y’all the rights have been purchased, and it’s being adapted for a series….not sure by who, I just remember the announcement 😀

Down to Earth by Pookie Senpai: One thing you’ll notice when you get into webcomics is there is a HUGE cute factor. Huge. “Cute” is something I feel like is hard to write because a lot of that comes down to interpretation. Having a visual story takes a lot of the guesswork out of interpreting cuteness. Down the Earth is STRONG with cuteness. Zaida is a cute little floaty humanoid alien who crash-lands in Kade’s backyard. Kade is struggling to keep his spirits up after a bad breakup. Zaida has escaped her home planet in search of something new, and her curious spirits do a lot to bring Kade out of the fog he’s been in. He finds himself enjoying things he hasn’t in a long time as he teaches Zaida (Zay for short) how to live on Earth and blend in with the humans. Did I mention Zaida is a REAL cutie?? Well she is.

Sarah’s Scribbles by Sarah Andersen: You may have seen this one floating around on Facebook or Twitter. It is a favorite that gets shared by many. Each episode of this one is only a few panels, but oh so worth it. This girl is me in every sense. I cackle reading them and then immediately read it to my husband who rolls his eyes and says “Who does that sound like?” But seriously it’s why I like it so much!

Midnight in Poppy Land by Lilydusk: I love this one because TORA IS A DREAMBOAT. CHANGE MY MIND. There’s a great story behind it, too – a mystery about a notebook. But I’m mostly here for Tora. Why do I have a crush on a drawing, you may ask…okay, but have you SEEN him??

This is one of my faves too. I’m so drawn into the story. I need to know Tora’s backstory, his slight obsession with our Poppy, and so much more. The tension in this one is through the roof!

True Beauty by Yaongyi: This one I found interesting. It’s about a girl who wears makeup, and looks completely different without it. To the point where she is scared to death for her boyfriend to see her without it. At one point, he does see her without it and doesn’t recognize her! Here’s the thing tho: I am so very white – so very Northern European that I have no clue how Korean beauty standards work. I’ve been educated on the subject by this toon! There’s a fantastic love triangle in this one, and they’re all so CUTE. A lot of these comics are written in Korean, so you get to see a lot of Korean and Japanese influence woven into the comic world. Also, it makes me want to eat Ramen a lot?? That’s either a side effect of the art or I’m always hungry…kind of a toss up….

In the Bleak Midwinter by Kat/Ali: This one is dark and gruesome and I love it! I’ve always enjoyed sci-fi dystopians. This one is about robots who I think have rebelled. I’m not entirely sure yet, we are only 10 episodes in. So far though the main girl has survived not one, but two shots to the head….so there’s that. Like I said, it’s dark and not for the faint of heart. It also has its own soundtrack and gorgeous illustrations. But again dark…have I said that too much?

Your Turn! Do you read WEBTOON™? Do you have a favorite? If not, what genres do you enjoy? I’m sure we can find one you’ll like 😉 Share below

The thing about Webtoons is that you not only get a good story, but you get some incredible art! That was what struck me first about Lore Olympus. The art is unmatched.
