TTT #191 – Spring 2020 TBR

Posted April 14, 2020 by Lillian in Features / 12 Comments

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookishย in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together

Happy Tuesday y’all! What a crazy few weeks it’s been. My brain has not wanted to focus on much of anything so I’ve been readingโ€ฆ.A LOT. But I’ve missed y’all so I sat down this past weekend, caught up on reviews, and have been working on these Top Ten posts. This week’s topic is “Books I Enjoyed But Rarely Talk About.” Y’all I talk about books nonstop to anyone that will listen. I guarantee you that the only ones I rarely talk about are the ones I didn’t enjoy ๐Ÿ˜‰ Since I’ve missed the topics from the last several weeks, I’m going to share my Spring TBR. As always, titles/covers link to Blog/Goodreads/Amazon(aff) and are in order by release date.

Book Cover for "Nate and the Invisible Girl" by Michelle MacQueen

Nate and the Invisible Girl by Michelle MacQueen (Apr. 3)

Rule #1 of falling in love with the girl you left behind: This time, stay.ย

Even when said girl is the one pushing you out the door.ย

Ten years ago, Nate Madison left Gulf City when his parents divorced, splitting up their family. He never expected to return, to have to face everyone he left behind.ย

When he crashes in the most important surf competition of his career, it takes away the one thing heโ€™s always relied on, a love for the ocean.ย

And he isnโ€™t sure he wants it back.ย

Broken, he returns to the last place he remembers feeling safe, the last people who loved him. Only, none of them are the children they were when they last parted.ย

Not his two siblings.ย

Not the girl next door, the one whoโ€™d been his best friend, his everything.ย

Samantha Reed thinks sheโ€™s invisible, that no one sees the girl beyond the illness clouding her days.ย

But he does. The more time Nate spends letting Sam heal the rift between him and the sea, the more he realizes all he sees is her.ย

When his old life comes calling, will he have to choose between Sam and the future he always saw for himself?

Beware of strong girls overcoming struggles, cute surfer boys, and definite beach envy.

Book Cover for "Chosen Ones" by Veronica Roth

Chosen Ones by Veronica Roth (Apr. 7)

Fifteen years ago, five ordinary teenagers were singled out by a prophecy to take down an impossibly powerful entity wreaking havoc across North America. He was known as the Dark One, and his weapon of choiceโ€”catastrophic events known as Drainsโ€”leveled cities and claimed thousands of lives. Chosen Ones, as the teens were known, gave everything they had to defeat him.

After the Dark One fell, the world went back to normal . . . for everyone but them. After all, what do you do when youโ€™re the most famous people on Earth, your only education was in magical destruction, and your purpose in life is now fulfilled?

Of the five, Sloane has had the hardest time adjusting. Everyone else blames the PTSDโ€”and her huge attitude problemโ€”but really, sheโ€™s hiding secrets from them . . . secrets that keep her tied to the past and alienate her from the only four people in the world who understand her.

On the tenth anniversary of the Dark Oneโ€™s defeat, something unthinkable happens: one of the Chosen Ones dies. When the others gather for the funeral, they discover the Dark Oneโ€™s ultimate goal was much bigger than they, the government, or even prophecy could have foretoldโ€”bigger than the world itself.

And this time, fighting back might take more than Sloane has to give.

Book Cover for "Aurora Burning" by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff

Aurora Burning by Jay Kristoff & Amie Kaufman (May 5)

Our heroes are back . . . kind of. From the bestselling co-authors of the Illuminae Files comes the second book in the epic Aurora Cycle series about a squad of misfits, losers, and discipline cases who just might be the galaxy’s best hope for survival.ย

First, the bad news: an ancient evil–you know, your standard consume-all-life-in-the-galaxy deal–is about to be unleashed. The good news? Squad 312 is standing by to save the day. They’ve just got to take care of a few small distractions first.

Like the clan of gremps who’d like to rearrange their favorite faces.ย

And the cadre of illegit GIA agents with creepy flowers where their eyes used to be, who’ll stop at nothing to get their hands on Auri.ย

Then there’s Kal’s long-lost sister, who’s not exactly happy to see her baby brother, and has a Syldrathi army at her back. With half the known galaxy on their tails, Squad 312 has never felt so wanted.ย

When they learn theย Hadfieldย has been found, it’s time to come out of hiding. Two centuries ago, the colony ship vanished, leaving Auri as its sole survivor. Now, its black box might be what saves them. But time is short, and if Auri can’t learn to master her powers as a Trigger, the squad and all their admirers are going to be deader than the Great Ultrasaur of Abraaxis IV.

Shocking revelations, bank heists, mysterious gifts, inappropriately tight bodysuits, and an epic firefight will determine the fate of the Aurora Legion’s most unforgettable heroes–and maybe the rest of the galaxy as well.
