2020 Reading Challenges…Accepted

Posted January 2, 2020 by Lillian in Challenges / 6 Comments

It’s my favorite day of the year….reading challenge day ๐Ÿ˜€ I totally just made that up! But today is the day that I sign up for this year’s reading challenges. Last year I scaled way back on the number of challenges I participated in. This year I’ve decided to add a few back and a couple of new ones. For 2020, I’m planning to participate in 6 challenges. All of the challenges start on January 1, 2020 and end on December 31, 2020. Read on to see my goals for this year, and if you are interested how to sign up.

The 2020 Audiobook Challenge is hosted by theย Caffeinated Book Reviewerย andย Hot Listens. This will be my fourth year participating in this challenge. Over the last few years, I’ve rediscovered my love for audiobooks. When I was young and in my prime, I would listen to books on my way to work (it was an hour commute one way). Now I listen for fun and while I do housework. Basically listening lets me multitask.ย For this challenge, you simply have to listen to audiobooks. You canย sign upย anytime between now and December 31, 2020.

The Rules

Runs January 1, 2020 โ€“ December 31, 2020. You can join at any time.

The goal is to find a new love for audios or to outdo yourself by listening to more audios in 2020 than you did in 2018.

Books must be in audio format (CD, MP3, etc.)

ANY genres count.

Re-reads and crossovers from other reading challenges are allowed.

You do not have to be a book blogger to participate; you can track your progress on Goodreads, Facebook, LibraryThing, etc.

If youโ€™re a blogger grab the button and do a quick post about the challenge to help spread the word. If youโ€™re not a blogger you can help by posting on Facebook or Tweet about the challenge.

Updates plus a giveaway will be posted twice during the year. The first update will be June 30, 2020, and the last update will take place on December 15, 2020.

My Goal

My goal for 2020 is to listen to one audiobook a week, so I’m setting a goal of 50 audiobooks for the year. That is nearly double what I listened to in 2019. I’m aiming for Look Ma No Hands level (50+ audiobooks) this year. It’s a big goal, but I’m determined to meet it ๐Ÿ˜€ You can track my progress below or on my Goodreads shelf.

The 2020 Book To Movie Challenge is hosted by Michelle @ Gather Together and Read. This challenge challenges the reader to read books that will become movies during the current year. Michelle has already done the hard work for you by compiling a list of 2020 movies with their release dates. I’m hoping to pair this challenge with my Novel Flicks feature and read the book, see the movie, and review them both. This challenge starts January 1, 2020 through December 31, 2020. You can sign up here.

The Rules

Read only books being made into movies for release in 2020.

The books you read can count for other challenges. Ebooks, audiobooks, and traditional formats all count.

The start date is January 1, 2020 so any book you started between the first of January, and now, counts. End date is December 31, 2020.

Remember, TV series/mini-series count too.

Pick your level (and additional levels)

My Goals

Michelle has made this challenge so fun! There are multiple levels to choose from so you don’t feel burdened. There are several book adaptations coming to screen this year that I want to read before I see. With that in mind, my goal level is First One to the Theater (4+ books). I’m also going to participate in the additional levels Not Ready to Let Go (1+ books from 2019) and The Movie Was Better (What?!) (seeing the movie that goes with the book). As I already stated I want to pair my reading with our Novel Flicks feature so be on the lookout for those. I’m already reading The Voyages of Dr. Dolittle in prep for the new Robert Downey Jr. adaptation ๐Ÿ˜‰ You can track my progress below or on my Goodreads shelf.

The 2020 Finishing the Series Reading Challenge is hosted by Celebrity Readers. This will be my third year participating and my favorite challenge ๐Ÿ˜€ Why is it my favorite? Because it gives me an excuse to binge read. I LOVE binge reading series. Before I became a blogger this is exactly how I would read. I’d pick up a series and read it until I was either caught up or finished with the series. 2 books, 12 books, it didn’t matter the length. I just like binging series. Since I started blogging however, I’ve found that binging doesn’t happen much. As a result, I have a ton of series I’ve started but not finished. Thanks to this challenge I’ve completed 18 series over the last two years. If you are interested in joining me, it starts January 1, 2020, and ends December 31, 2020. You can sign up here.

The Rules

The challenge will run from January 1st, 2020 to December 31st, 2020.  Books must be read during this time frame to count.  Sign up is open from now until December 1st, 2020, so you may join even just for the last month of the year.

Series can be already completed as well as still ongoing.  For ongoing series, the goal is to catch up to the most recent book published by the end of 2020.

We donโ€™t care if you have only 1 book or 10 books to read in order to finish your series, as long as youโ€™ve started the series before 2020 (ie read at least one book in the series), it counts.  Re-reads are not required.

Any format and length of book counts โ€“ print, ebook, audio, ARC, etc.

Series can be any length (even if itโ€™s just a Duet).

Crossovers from other challenges are totally acceptable!

Reviews are not required, but highly encouraged.

My Goal

For the last two years I’ve completed this challenge with an A-List status. My goal this year is to continue that tradition with A-List Series Finisher (9+ series completed). You can track my progress below or on my Goodreads shelf. Please note that the number is a reflection of the number of books I believe I’ll need to read in order to complete the challenge NOT the number of series read.

The Netgalley and Edelweiss Reading Challenge 2020 is hosted by Reading Between the Pages and runs from January 1, 2020 to December 31, 2020. This will be my third year participating in this challenge. Basically this one is for reviewers. If you have a Netgalley or Edelweiss account, chances are you have fallen below that golden 80% at one point or another. Or if you are like me, you’ve been below it for the last year ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ Regardless, the point of this challenge is to clean off those shelves and get your Netgalley percentage up. If you are interested, you can sign up here.

The Rules

The challenge runs from January 1, 2020 โ€“ December 31, 2020. There is no deadline to sign up.

Everyone is welcome to participate โ€“ you do not need to have a blog.

Any genre, release date, length, etc. counts โ€“ it just needs to be a book from NetGalley or Edelweiss.

Books can count for more than one challenge that you are participating in.

The first day of each month I will post a monthly โ€œlink-upโ€ for you to link your reviews. If you forget one month, no worries, just catch up the next month.

Help spread the book love and use the hashtag: #NGEW2020

My Goal

My goal for the last couple of years is to clean off my Netgalley shelf so I can start fresh the next year. I have the same goal this year. I currently have 60ish books on my Netgalley shelf that need to be read so I’m going for the Gold (50 books). You can track my progress below or follow my Goodreads shelf.

The 2020 New Release Challenge is hosted by Linda & Brandee @(un)Conventional Bookworms and runs from January 1 to December 31, 2020. This will be my 5th year participating in this challenge. I love it too! It’s not a hard challenge at all. The goal is simple, read any book that was released after January 1st of the current year. It must be 100 pages or longer to count. If you are interested, you can sign up here.

The Rules

Books have to be released and reviewed in 2020.

Other challenges can be used as well, if you are participating in the Netgalley / Edelweiss challenge or in the COYER challenge, books can count towards more than one challenge, as long as the ones you use for the 2020 New Release Reading Challenge qualify to the other rules.

The minimum length for a book to qualify is 100 pages, it can be in any format though, physical, e-book, ARC or audiobook.

The New Release Challenge is open from January 1st through December 31st 2020, and sign-ups are open until September 1st 2020.

You donโ€™t have to be a blogger to participate, you can link to your review on Goodreads or Booklikes instead โ€“ so donโ€™t be shy!

If you want to spread the love, please use #2020NewReleaseChallenge on Twitter.

My Goal

I’ve never had an issue meeting my goal for this challenge until last year. 2019 I focused more on my backlist books, reading the books that I wanted to read and not so much on the new stuff. I barely met my goal of 50 books. Because I’m focusing on more of the same this year, I’ll be setting my goal a little lower. I’m still aiming for New Release Pro (31-60 books), but I’m setting my goal to 40. If I see that I’m going to meet that easily, I’ll bump it up midway through the year. You can track my progress below or on my Goodreads shelf.

The 2020 Swords & Stars Reading Challenge is hosted by Ms. Nose in a Book and runs from January 1 to December 31, 2020. This is a new-to-me challenge, and it combines all of my favorites. It is a sci-fi and fantasy reading challenge. Y’all those are my genres! Those are my go-to reads and I cannot wait to participate in this challenge. If you are interested, you can sign up here.

The Rules

The Goal of this challenge is to read one book that matches up with each one of the challenges.

You must create a sign up blog post/video/bookstagram post and link it back to this page so I and anyone else can follow your adventure and see what you are reading. This year the links ups are simple. There are only two link ups required. Your sign up post and your wrap up/completion post. If you do not have a blog, you can link up a goodreads shelf of the books you completed/reviewed. You can sign up anytime up to December 31st. Books count as long as they are read in 2020. This can be any format (print, audiobook, etc) and any page length other than specified in the challenges. Whatever Goodreads counts, will count in this challenge this includes graphic novels and novellas.

This year I made a book club on goodreads, if you want to track your reading there by posting a reading TBR you can keep track of or if you want to talk SFF books with other readers. This is also great for readers who want to participate but donโ€™t have a blog but have a Goodreads account or if you are like me and want to do both. You can get to the book club by searching Swords & Stars in Goodreads groups.

Books read for other challenges definitely do qualify for this challenge. In fact, it is encouraged! All books must be of the Science Fiction or Fantasy genres.

You can do all of the challenges, you can some of the challengesโ€ฆdo as many or as little as you like, the goal is to have fun and enjoy SFF books.

Please use #SwordsnStars for Social Media Updates and be sure to link up your sign up posts & wrap ups below. If you ae participating on instagram you donโ€™t have to use the link up, you can use the #swordsnstars hashtag, I will be following that and checking out peopleโ€™s accounts/posts.

My Goal

There are twenty (if I counted them right) challenges for this particular challenge. My goal is to read at least half of them, so 10. Because I like lists and things I can check off, I created a spreadsheet to go along with this challenge. Feel free to use it ๐Ÿ˜‰ You can track my progress below or on my Goodreads shelf.
