2018 Reading Challenges: 1st Quarter Update

March 30, 2018 Challenges 1

I cannot believe that the first quarter of 2018 is already coming to a close!! It just doesn’t seem possible. I can’t say, however, that I’m sad to see it go. The 1st quarter has been rough for us! Flu, strep throat, medical emergencies….to put it in perspective my husband has met his deductible for the year AND his out of pocket max is also almost met. Despite all the sickness, this 1st quarter was a good reading quarter. I’ve read 34 books (maybe 35 by Sunday, we will see) so far this year and am on track to meet… Read more »

The Defiance never gets old! This is my third time reading ‘s zombie-esque dystopian and first time listening to the audiobook. I love Peree and Fenn, their world, and the fight for a better life. In this installment of the series, Fenn and Peree are back in their villages and must convince their people to return with them to Koolkuna and their protected waters. Fenn is a different person than who we met in the first book. She is more independent now and not afraid to speak her mind. I liked seeing this version of Fenn as she grieves the loss… Read more »

February #2018HW – Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo

February #2018HW – Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo

Not what I was expecting, but sometimes that can be a good thing. Crooked Kingdom by broke me and put me back together again. It’s hard to really describe these characters without remembering (with a little horror) that they range in age from 17-20. They are still kids for all intents and purposes, and it hurt my heart every time that fact was thrown in my face. Picking up where Six of Crows left off, Kaz is on the warpath. He has concocted the schemes to end all schemes in order to get Inej back and teach Van Eck a lesson. In fact, Kaz… Read more »

Audio Review: One Blood Ruby by Melissa Marr

Audio Review: One Blood Ruby by Melissa Marr

February 26, 2018 Reviews 0

I was REALLY looking forward to starting One Blood Ruby by after I had read the first book in the series. I enjoyed Seven Black Diamonds that much! I liked the multiple POVs, the Fae living in the human world, the modern setting, really all of it. So why was One Blood Ruby not as good as I was hoping?! The book picks up pretty much right where it left off. Lilywhite, now Lilydark, is about to be named the heir to the Hidden Throne. However she has some stipulations, namely that she would like to live in both worlds, stop the war, offer protections to… Read more »

Happy Saturday y’all! Earlier this month you voted for me to read Geekerella by , and I’m SO glad that you did. This is a fun book, full of fangirling, fandoms, and a little romance too. If you enjoy contemporary romance, I highly recommend this sweet YA. Geekerella by is a sweet, fun contemporary YA romance centered around fandoms. Elle is a girl obsessed with the cult-classic show Starfield. When the show gets a movie reboot, she is all kinds of excited until she learns that the soap star Darien Freeman is playing the lead. What Elle doesn’t realize though is that Darien is just… Read more »

January #2018HW Review – Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor

January #2018HW Review – Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor

February 5, 2018 Reviews 4

Y’all I can’t even begin to describe how much I loved Strange the Dreamer by . I fell into this story and didn’t come up for air until it was over. It was everything I’ve come to love about fantasy. There was action, intrigue, mythology, and romance all tied together neatly to create a magnificent story. Lazlo Strange is an orphan raised by monks who escaped to the library to work as a young teen. Lazlo is a dreamer. He pictures the world around him differently. He believes in fairy tales. And he is inherently good. I don’t think there is… Read more »

Happy Saturday y’all! This month y’all voted for me to read Hunted by and I’m so glad you did. I loved it! I had an eARC of this book that somehow got lost in my pile last year, so I decided to purchase the audiobook for my read this month. I highly recommend it. The narrators are fantastic and I found myself getting lost in the story as they read. If you enjoy fairy tale retellings, fantasy, and a historical/medieval setting, I highly recommend you grab a copy. Hunted by is a fantastic retelling of the beloved classic Beauty and the Beast. I devoured this… Read more »

Happy Saturday y’all! This week was one of those weeks where it was too cold to go out which means it was perfect reading weather. About two years ago (almost 3 now),  I read Spelled by and while it was just an okay read, the ending left me intrigued and wanting more. So imagine my happy surprise when the book turned into a trilogy called . I highly recommend this to those that enjoy fairy tale retellings, urban fantasy, and snark….lots of snark! This review is hard to write because while I really enjoyed Wanted by , I was also really lost through the… Read more »

Review: The Scourge by A.G. Henley

January 18, 2018 Reviews 0

I forgot how much I love The Scourge by ! I picked up the audiobook to listen to last week and I could not stop listening. I binged it in one day and it was perfection. I first read The Scourge back in 2014 around the time the second book of the series hit shelves. I devoured everything from the series then and waited for the third book. However I somehow missed the release and because it had been so long I wanted to reread. I’m SO glad I did. The premise of the book is simple. Set in the distant future, people living… Read more »
