Interview with J.D. Wright, Author of MASKED

 

Happy Monday y’all! Today I’m so excited to be participating in the blog tour for J.D. Wright‘s Masked. In my opinion, there is not enough superhero novels in the sci-fi/fantasy genre. I can’t get enough of this sub-genre 😀 Follow the tour below and keep reading for an interview with the author!

Tell us a little about yourself.

I’m a military wife and mother of four. I own a bakery and am constantly covered in either sugar or food coloring. When I’m not writing, I’m watching movies/tv or reading. I read/review on my personal book blog. I also enjoy playing video games like The Sims and Wizard 101.

What inspired you to become a writer?

I wrote my first novel in 2014. Before that, I had only really ever written poetry. I’ve had poems published online since I was 8-9 years old, back when the internet was dial-up. When I was in high school, I had tried my hand at writing a fantasy book and made all sorts of notes for it. But then I got busy with something else and forgot about it. When I went through some storage boxes and found my notes, I decided to finish the book and my first novel, Everealm, was born.

Is there an author or book that influenced you in any way?

Several actually. I was in middle school and getting bored with The Babysitter’s Club books when my mother handed me my first Nora Roberts book. I was hooked on romance from that day forward. I also read a lot of Terry Goodkind’s fantasy novels which sparked my need for writing in fantasy. And the Harry Potter Series introduced me to the possibilities of magic. So it’s been an accumulation of many authors over the years.

Where did you get your ideas from?

I wish I knew. Sometimes, they come from songs. Sometimes, I see something on tv that inspires me. With Masked, I saw a children’s superhero show that made me want to use that theme. With my contemporary romance books, I just try to think of real-life situations in which people might fall in love.

Is there anything in Masked based on real-life experience or is it purely imagination?

It’s mostly just imagination. I write a lot of fantasy/paranormal so it has to be. But when writing the romance, there are times when I interject things from my own experiences with love and loss.

What was your favorite part to write?

I really enjoyed writing the scene where Majestic and Orion wind up going after the same target. It’s always fun to write scenes with these two.

Is there a character or theme you’d like to revisit?

There will definitely be more new supers created as the series goes on. That theme won’t end in Masked. There is still some of that supergene formula left over and it will make a big impact in future books.

What are you working on now?

I’m writing the second book of the Superheroes UnderCover Series and am over half way through. Then I’ll put Cyper City down for a few months and go back to Everealm, finishing up the Songs of Everealm Series.

Now that you are published, what’s been some of the hardest criticism you’ve dealt with? Best compliment?

Oh, man. My first novel, Everealm, has been ripped to shreds by readers at times. It was my very first book and it also wasn’t very well edited. I can easily admit that I had no idea what I was doing when I wrote it. Hearing someone hated that particular book hurts more than any of the others. But it was also a labor of love and so many readers have sent me messages expressing their love for the series so I have learned to tune out the negative reviews and embrace the positive ones. So far, Masked has received mostly good reviews and it’s definitely a boost to my writing confidence.

Any advice you’d like to share with aspiring writers?

Just write. Don’t write to impress anyone but yourself. And when you put your book out for the world to read, expect some people will hate it. If you have realistic expectations, you’ll get realistic results.

Anything you’d like to say to your fans?

I am so grateful to anyone who gives me, a pretty unknown author, a chance. And hearing feedback on the books, good or bad, is actually incredibly helpful. I’m very thankful to my readers and love hearing from them. I get messages on Facebook, Goodreads, Instagram, Twitter, you name it. And I love interacting with my readers. I’m a reader too and I try my best to be available and approachable. So feel free to send me a message or tag me anywhere!

Favorite TV show?

Oh, there are so many. Grey’s Anatomy, Law & Order SVU, So You Think You Can Dance, Friends, just to name a few.

Favorite place to write?

Honestly? In the bath tub. It’s the only place in the house I have total privacy for a few hours.

If you had to choose just one book, what would it be and why?

On the Banks of Plum Creek by Laura Ingalls Wilder. This book humbled me as a child. To see how children lived before our luxuries was an eye opener. I often re-read it and it makes me want to garden for some reason…

Last question and possibility the most important…what brand of cereal best describes you and why?

Probably Frosted Cheerios. They’re solid and sturdily healthy underneath but have a bit of sugar flare on the top. I’m pretty down to earth but also have a wild and crazy side at times.
