Weekend Reads

I am loving The Gates series by A.S. Oren! Series one of the Gates follows the characters of Gildemer. Series two just started this month and follows the characters of Miltic. Both are so good and so unique. I love how the author is bridging them together too. It brings a whole new level to serial series. If you enjoy fantasy, steampunk, and shorter reads, I highly suggest you check Miltic out!

I received this book via the author, A.S. Oren. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of this review.

This book may be unsuitable for people under 17 years of age due to its use of sexual content, drug and alcohol use, and/or violence.

Reviewing eARC Rating:

Sandra Serling--genius and moody girl of the century--finds herself in an an Alice and Wonderland esque situation when the utterly sexy Steampunk knight Stillan comes blasting through her closet door while she's in the middle of changing clothes. She isn't the brother he's looking for. What will they do when the timer on his portal to his country, Miltic, runs out and he accidently takes her barreling back with him?

She can only stay so long in Miltic before too much time passes by in her own world and she won't be able to return to the life she knew before. But after getting to know Stillan, Desen (The sky pirate with all the charm of Jack Sparrow), Tylek (Stilan's brother), and Faust (the Steambike riding, pub crawling humakat) will she want to return? After all, they've awoken a part of her she never thought existed, but will that part end up killing her when the King of their land figures out who and what she really is?

I have no words!!! Miltic Vol. 1 is AMAZEBALLS!!! A.S. Oren has done it again, dragging me into a new world, with new characters that I never want to leave. Sandra is a very smart, almost 18 year-old who needs a new life. When a pirate from another world comes crashing through her closet, she decides to see where this crazy “dream” will take her.

Seriously, Sandra is great! She’s snarky, courageous, and just rolls with whatever life throws at her. She’s incredibly smart, but I think this hurts her common sense just a tad 😉 Her parents are drunks, so really she’s on her own. When Stillan literally falls into her life, she thinks it is all a dream and decides to follow him and see just where this dream is taking her. And boy what a ride she’s in for!!!!

The story is told in dual POV between Sandra and Stillan. Stillan is my favorite of the boys 😀 He’s a knight for the king in Miltic, has steam-powered legs (yes, you read that right) and he’s on a mission to find his brother when the portal from his world opens in Sandra’s closet. He accidentally pulls her back to Miltic with him and now it’s his job to get her home. He’s loyal, afraid of nothing, and mysterious. I can’t wait to learn more about him.

The world-building is amazing. Miltic is a barren land with a steampunk feel. They are more advanced than our world, so the technology is very cool, but their clothing and speak is reminiscent of mid-1800s. I LOVE it! The plot is centered around Stillan’s brother’s mission to a sacrifice for Miltic so that the land could survive. Tyler (his brother) I think is hiding something, but that may be my over active imagination.

Overall I really enjoyed this first volume. Personally I like the longer volumes. There are four episodes per volume, each episode is like watching your favorite TV show. It’s complete with it’s own plot and focus but ties into the series arch. I cannot wait for more! A little warning though, while the sister series Gildemer is a cleaner read, this one is not. It is full of strong language and I wouldn’t doubt if there are some sexual scenes in the future (though this volume contains none). So 18+ only please 😉 If you enjoy new adult, steampunk, dystopian, or you’re just looking for a shorter read, then this book is for you.

Final Conclusion:

liked-it
