I have a confession a make…there are books out there, popular books that I have never read.
I know, I know. Shocker right?! Today’s top ten topic is “Top Ten Hyped Books I’ve Never Read” and there are a lot out there that I’ve never read and some I don’t plan to read….EVER. Why you might ask. Well let me tell you. Sometimes the hype is so big for a book that I’m scared to read it. I’m a weird person and sometimes popular books make no sense to me. Sometimes it’s because I just don’t have the time to read them, especially if they came out during my dark years (aka the no-reading years….college). And sometimes I just have no interest in those books. Below is a list of my top ten hyped books that I’ve never read in no particular order. As alwasy, covers link to Goodreads.
My Top Ten Hyped Books I’ve Never Read
The Selection by Kiera Cass – I honestly love the premise of this book and if you follow the blog regularly you know I cannot resist a good YA dystopian. I even own this book, having picked it up as a freebie a few years back. The problem: I’ve just never found a time to read it. However I plan to change that this week. I’m thinking I need a good dystopian read and this might just be it.
A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin – For once I can say that I just have no interest in reading this book. I know what you’re saying….”But why?! It’s in your preferred fantasy genre.” I can even hear the whine in your voice. Let me explain. I actually own the entire series in both paperback and ebook format. My hubby loves them! He bugs me on a regular basis asking if I’m going to read them and telling me how much I’ll like them. And I have no doubt that he is right. BUT I’ve heard so much about them that I think I’m better off waiting until the series is finished and then just taking a nosedive and binge reading them. What do you think?
The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare – This was my Christmas present from my sweet husband this year. I’ve been dying to read the series and he surprised me with the entire collection in hardback. Now I just need to make time to binge read…I’m thinking this fall would be a perfect time to do so. Don’t I have the best husband in the whole world?!
The Iron King by Julie Kagawa – Another book I already own. I believe I picked this up a while back as a freebie, not sure, but it is sitting on my Kindle waiting to be read. This book fits my genre preference to a T, I just have never had the time.
Legend by Marie Lu – I have a confession to make….I had never heard of this book until I started blogging. Now I see it used in comparison to all my favorite dystopians. I’m thinking this is a must read book that I unfortunately just never knew about.
Graceling by Kristin Cashore – This is another book that I hadn’t heard of until I started blogging. But if I’m completely honest it doesn’t appeal to me. I read lots of fantasy and this sounds similar to some I’ve already read. No point in repeating a plot line.
Half Bad by Sally Green – So I’m convinced from other bloggers that this book is absolutely amazing and a must read, yet the hype is so much I’m afraid to read it. What happens if I don’t like it? Am I then exiled from the YA community?! This can’t happen, so I’m thinking I shall pass on you, unless by chance you appear on my kindle or in person then I will devour you 😉
Red Rising by Pierce Brown – “The Earth is dying.” That first sentence in the synopsis is enough to make me yell at myself for not reading this book yet. I’m thinking it should be a priority now that I’ve revisited this. What do you think?
The Maze Runner by James Dashner – Confession….I’ve checked out this book from my local library not once but three times already this year. All three times I found something else to do instead of reading it. I don’t know why I’m put off by this book. The cover is intriguing, the title caught my attention, the synopsis hooked me, but the hype is so much and I have very high expectations. I don’t like it when I’m let down by a book that is supposed to be great. So I’m afraid this one is a pass.
Delirium by Lauren Oliver – Another confession….I’ve never read a book by this author. I’m not sure why. The premise of all her books sound good to me. But everytime I’ve had the chance to read one of her books I just haven’t had the time or the want to do so.

I really enjoyed Half Bad, but I know that it’s dividing a lot of readers. The Selection is almost like a guilty pleasure for me. I don’t think it’s the best dystopian book and whilst I was reading it, I definitely thought of it as more of a romance than dystopian. Great list!

I don’t get why people are so affected by book hype. For me, reading is straightforward-if I like the sound of a book I’ll read it when I get round to it. If I don’t, I won’t. Simple! I don’t care how popular or hated the book is, I’ll only read what appeals to me. For example, NOTHING would get me to read 50 Shades, and nothing will stop me reading something I love the sound of. I don’t care about hype and I don’t let it drag me towards a book or make me run away from a book. I don’t worry about what people think of my reading habits either as I don’t read to suit them! I see people getting themselves in a frenzy over what they read, what they haven’t read, what others might think of them if they read or don’t read something and so on and I don’t get it. Read what you feel like reading and stuff the hype!

I loved Iron King! The whole Iron Fey series is among my faves! It was awesome! Legend was also a pretty cool trilogy! The Maze Runner was pretty good too!
I haven’t read any of the others and City of Bones made my list too, but on the I never plan to read it section. Just not for me sadly!

Ah the TMI series is a frequent feature in this TTT! I got through three books, the first two were really good and then the third fell so flat. CoB was brilliant and really got me in to reading YA! I think I’ll continue them but it’s now been ages since I stopped! I hope you get around to reading some of these, great list 🙂

Even though I’m not a big dystopian fan I do really want to read The Selection. It sounds like a lot of fun and like you I love the premise. The hype on The Maze Runner is kind of confusing. People seem to either love or hate that book so much. I love that you’ve checked it out 3 times. I thought I was the only one who did that! Great list!

The problem with waiting for GRR Martin to finish the Game of Thrones series is that it’s likely he never will. Unless he lives to be 287 years old!

You should read Lauren Oliver! I don’t think she’s for everyone but I LOVE her. And she has a lot of different kinds of books as well. It sounds like you like dystopian, which you can find in the Delirium series. But she also has contemporary and light mystery books. Aaaand I’ve met her, so that makes me like all the more.

I recently read The Selection and was pleasantly surprised by it, do keep in mind that the dystopia aspect is pretty mild. It’s mroe about the romance and the fight for the prince. I have read Graceling and the sequel Fire and enjoyed both books. I know I loved Delirium when I read it, but then never had the urge to continue the series and still haven’t read the second book. I have heard of most of the others, but mostly no intention of readign them. I don’t think Game of Thrones is for me, the series just doesn’t appeal to me. Sometimes I don’t read hyped books because I honestly don’t have interest in them, some I am not sure if I will read. Some sound okay, but not sure if they are for me and some are just so overhyped I almost lose interest. But I have also read enough hyped books that I did enjoy, so I know I shouldn’t stay away from books for that reason alone.

I’ve avoided A Game of Thrones for the longest. I don’t think I’ll be reading that one either. It’s just such a big commitment because there’s so many books. I don’t really have any interest in reading them.

Great list. I’ve heard of all these, but the only ones I’ve read are The Maze Runner and City of Bones. I wasn’t overly impressed with either of them.
